PLEASANT PLACE X MACGUFFIN
Fieldclub The Nursery
Aalsmeer/Moerheim, 6 April 2025
As a follow-up to MacGuffin Magazine Nº 12 The Log, MacGuffin and platform Pleasant Place, organize a field club on the design of the nursery anno 2025. Whereas many small-scale nurseries have the belief that nature determines their design, the starting point of large-scale breeders is quite different. Their operations are fully automated –– in greenhouses, there is 24/7 monitoring via computer dashboards and smartphone apps. Here, it is not nature that decides, but the algorithm. In a fieldclub we look at alternatives to monoculture and economies of scale.
With grower's daughter Lou Lou van Staaveren, photographer and publisher of art and garden magazine Pleasant Place, Bonne Reijn, fashion designer and cousin of Mien Ruys, philosopher Lenneke Berkhout and artists Müge Yilmaz and Marija Šujica, we visit a number of places that tell about mono- vs. polyculture, including Royal van Zanten's greenhouses in Aalsmeer, Moerheim and the community garden Four Sisters in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. What is the future of (Dutch) horticulture?
